Today we’re glad to publish a special edition of Inspired Talks. Please welcome our guests today: Mills of UsTwo and Jon Burgerman – the two brains behind the new sensation of the app store – yes, Inkstrumental ladies and gentlemen!!

The app had a huge anticipation and is already well known in the creative community, however for the folks that are not familiar with Inkstrumental™ – what is it about?

Inkstrumental is made for those of you out there that have dreamed of creating your own band but don’t have what it takes. Now you can select the stars of the show, lay down the beats, mix the sounds, take the performance to the stage, film the music video then show it to the world and become famous all on an iPhone or iPod Touch.
The app lets you make and share crazy music with your friends. You can choose from a vast array of characters, each with their own weird sound that when tapped, is automatically played, recorded and added to the wonky, hypnotic, rolling beats.

By combining all the characters and sounds on offer you can create and record a mash-up of noise and mayhem. A sure fire way to delight and annoy in equal measure.

By hitting the YouTube icon you can share your music video with all friends and the rest of the world (who have access to the internet and YouTube).

How many nights & bottles of beer you spent creating Inkstrumental™?

Too many to mention but to give you an exact idea – Inkstrumental™ has been over a year in the making, a true mastercraft in ‘what you should never ever do when developing an app’.

Everything that could possibly go wrong – went wrong. The app very nearly became our equivalent of ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’ – in other words, failing to be released ever.

Now in hindsight, I can safely say it really is the app that should have never been released. We started the marketing for the app over a year ago, with multiple ‘coming soon’ campaigns, various concept changes, numerous rebuilds, and to top the madness off, we had a big ‘Inkstrumental™ Pre-Launch Party… 8 months ago!

It literally took until 1 week before submission for us to realise ourselves what the app was actually about… and that’s to ‘make and share’ Inkstrumental™ music video masterpieces.

Where did the idea come from?

It’s now over 1 year to the day that Inkstrumental™ (or Inkstruments™ as it was known then) was conceived.

At that time we were bathing in the micro success of MouthOff™ (63,000 paid downloads) the original and best sound reactive Mouth app available on the App Store.

MouthOff™ only USP was that the user could choose any number of beautifully crafted illustrated mouths to replace their own gob – something that clearly a lot of people wanted to do. MouthOff™ proved that consumers had an appetite (whether it was insatiable is questionable) for the bizarre.

Up to that point we had only created small fry applications – but since then we’ve released the highly acclaimed casual game masterpieces called .™, ..™ and …™ and the 210,000 downloaded PositionApp™. We wanted to make an app that was truly unique, truly insane, and truly wonderful yet truly ridiculous. It’s fair to say Inkstrumental™ is just that.

We learnt early on that a strong proposition coupled with a well-planned marketing campaign, was the key to making our apps successful.

We also realised that releasing a truly unique offering into an already congested app market place was going to be hard. Hence we contacted our good friend, Jon Burgerman, an artist who had successfully engineered a career based on his doodling. He was in essence a unique brand, and his brand essence was exactly what we needed to leverage.

Marrying ustwo’s notoriously contradictory approach to everything we do along with the insanity of Jon’s mind-bending imagination and creations – was a match made in hell. Exactly the place we wanted to be.

Jon – what other projects you finished recently or you’re involved in at the moment?

I’ve just come back from wild Winchester where my latest gallery exhibition, Brain Drain, has just opened.

Now I’m preparing for my next one, Lossy Botany Lab, which will open at Heliumcowboy artspace in Hamburg on July 1st (don’t worry, we’ve checked, it doesn’t clash with any World Cup matches).

It will feature strange plants.

Other than that I will be off to NYC shortly to play a couple of gigs with my musical project / band Anxieteam with fellow artist Jim Avignon

Jon – what are your common sources of inspiration?

I get inspiration from so many things. Yes, there are the usual things like art, design, music, literature, films etc but I think I get more inspired by stuff I don’t even know I’m going to see, such as weird anomalies you encounter on the street as you’re walking around. I like talking to people too, there’s nothing more brilliant and odd and inspiring than what people get up to in their lives. We have an in built idea about what is normal and acceptable that becomes completely warped and confounded when you talk to people, both locally and around the world. There’s nowt stranger than folk.

Mills – how did MouthOff – your uber popular signature app – influenced the work of the ustwo studio?

We made MouthOff™ as a laugh a minute gimmick to help users have a little fun! We then created the showroom which allowed anyone who made a video to post it on YouTube and subsequently our MouthOff™ site.

These videos formed a strong and effective marketing channel for the app meaning the app was receiving thousands of eyeballs each day. The only problem was that most of the users did not want to make a video of them looking stupid.

Inkstrumental™ turned the video creation on its head; so rather than asking the user to film a video of themselves we decided to reward them with their own Inkstrumental™ creation in the app.

The end goal of each Inkstrumental™ user session is an upload of the freshly created music video direct to YouTube. We encode the sound and video on the iPhone therefore pushing the boundaries of what the little device can do. Inkstrumental™ is a ‘make and share’ app. Nothing less, nothing more.

Mills – is it true that your work is highly influenced by Nelson Mandela?

As Nelson Mandela said: After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.

More goodies

During 2009, the studio developed and released 16 apps including the infamous MouthOffTM, .TM (48hour series), SteppinTM, and Reebok’s iSprint.

ustwo’s apps have sold globally and have become brands in their own right. Mills is well known within the industry with his refreshingly honest and open approach being well received by developers, gamers and fans alike.

I’ve written this Mobile Appifesto™ to share some of the many lessons that we’ve learnt over the last 12 months. In that time we’ve launched 16 apps on the iPhone platform (although much of this is applicable to all platforms) – we’ve experienced the highs and lows of iPhone app development. This Appifesto’s intention is to help inspire some of the design focused newbies to the world of app development and I hope it sets a precedent. It really is the only way.

Build solid foundations

Focus on creating a studio, company or tribe, (influenced by Seth Godin’s Tribes – a must read). This will form the basis of your brand, your very own style, your USP, what you stand for and this thinking will influence what you produce and create. Ultimately if you can create an app that users identify your handiwork in – you’re there.

Long term vs. short term

Think about longevity when it comes to your career as an app developer – it’s not about short term wins and the chances are that you won’t be one of those bedroom developer success stories that we’ve all read about – you’re probably more likely to be struck by a bolt of lightning. But remember, lightning does strike and when it does, it burns. Plot and build the bridges to success. It will come to those who really want it.

Passion

Passion leads to excitement, excitement leads to action, action leads to success. All of these are required in the game of app development – they are the necessities and bedrock to creating something special. You have to be driven by love of what you create over chasing the pot of gold. If you believe in what you are doing, others will want to taste the quality.

Innovation

I’m talking about design solution led, fully animated and UI focused apps that remain on iPhones and aren’t deleted in a few hours. I’m talking quality apps that innovate and make the community proud. Think of apps that you would want to use. A great idea is not just unique, it actually serves a purpose.

Originality

No room for copycats in this industry – that’s for total joker pretender studios. (Twitter clients are the exception as they are all pushing one another to make a better experience for the rest of us). Countless copycat apps are just blocking the pros pathway to success. If your idea has been copied – remember imitation is a form of admiration. Use the frustration of seeing bad apps made by passionless developers to drive you to succeed.

Usability

All about logical, engaging and beautiful user interface design – if users like using your app they will spread the word – simple. Bad design will mean instant deletion and bad ratings.

Sound effects

Think about sound from the very minute you start out. Sound adds an invisible physicality to button presses and motion on a touch screen. Sound immerses the user into the experience and helps to hold the attention. Without sound an app is only half the man.

Teamwork

Bring the best people to the table and work with them to help you. As a small developer don’t be afraid to ask your network for help – they could help you in aspects of business you may not have experience in. For example you may be the world’s best developer but know nothing about marketing – use your contacts, if you don’t have them, find them.

Build Fast

Speed is key – you must get your apps out there quickly. Not only to beat copycats, but also to keep development costs down. Every minute you spend on your app is quantifiable by the need to sell another app to recoup the costs. There are 2 schools of thought when it comes to the basics of development and building your app – either develop as you go (i.e. build and test) or plan it all out first then build the structure around it. All you need to be aware of is time is money.

Prototype

Flash is a perfect tool to build a test version of your app before getting heads down into the iPhone SDK. It allows you to see the design, sample gameplay, test transitions, and get a feel for your app. All about testing, testing and more testing – simple but so many apps have too many bugs when launched.

Knowledge is power

Hone your skills continually pushing the boundaries of what you know. Read as much about your chosen area as you can and make sure you know your stuff.

Influencers

It’s going to be almost impossible to get any traction with the ‘big tech journos’ so look to build relationships with niche and growing app review sites that will one day lead the way – AppBoy, AppSmile, app.it.ize.us, 8 bit Feed, CreativeApplications, PocketGamer.biz, Razorian Fly all gave us help from day 1.

Networking

Embrace other developers as fellow comrades in the battle for survival, learn from one another and pay respect to the masters out there and let their work inspire you, BUT don’t be afraid to speak your mind, get your views out there. No man’s an island.

Marketing

Tell your story to whoever will listen – the first steps in marketing what you do. It’s all about engaging with as many people as possible including users, potential users and influencers. So many marketing channels to explore from working with publishers, to banner ads, creating an email campaign, creating a website or a viral video on YouTube. Try and be as creative as possible and experiment – see what works for you and what drives downloads.

Social Media

Harness the power of social media intelligently! This is the simplest way to build a fan base and generate interest surrounding what you do. Get people on your side who will help spread the word. For example someone with 1000 contacts maybe able to influence his or her contacts on your behalf.

PR

Master the basics of PR – build anticipation – tell your story and engage with your audience. All about turning eyeballs into downloads. Some tips – on the day your app launches write a simple press release about your app and send it out to your favourite iPhone related sites. Should guarantee some PR coverage. You can then build on this – more sites – a bigger audience. List the sites that pick up your releases and give them future scoops.

Stats

Use Flurry, AppViz or similar to fine tune your approach – understand what updates have driven downloads, the importance of seasonal fluctuations in terms of sales and which marketing efforts have had a positive impact on your app.

Sell in/out

Approach big companies and organisations about the possibility of doing a branded version of your app. Anything is possible especially if your app has achieved a moderate level of success – a branded version will give your app a new lease of life. Big corps are always hungry for niche ideas and creativity.

Dedication

If you take a knock like with anything in life – get back up and keep trying.

Your turn

Well either you know mills™ as the man behind the ever fresh and popular MouthOff™ iPhone app, either as the co-owner of ustwo™ (the studio of dreams™), either as the first Inspired Magazine advertiser (thanks mate!) or as @millsustwo, one of the most honest and ferocious tweeters out there. A user with a special thing for coining and trademark all kinds of new words™

Before let him answer the questions, I should tell you he’s a no-nonsense, to the point guy, running a very quirky and approachable studio of 47 creative people, working. ustwo™ is a digital UX design company based in London and Malmö. Driven by its mission to ‘make products smile’, ustwo™ creates beautiful, user-friendly interfaces across the mobile, consumer electronics, medical and financial sectors. They used to be just two as the name suggests but have been amassing a team of the ‘best in show’ over the last 5 years and this year has seen the emergence of ustwo™ as a brand through there steady release of self initiated iPhone apps.

Inspired I was born and bread in London’s Streatham, but it didn’t take long for my parents to realise it wasn’t the type of place you want your little one running around in the streets, Moved to Tundbridge Wells for 12 years, where I met @sinxustwo my best mate and design partner. Now living in a little big house in Clapham, the city of the ‘family’ with my wife and little one.

Mills Born and bread in London’s Streatham. Now living in a little big house in Clapham, the city of the ‘family’.

Inspired You have a bunch of projects you’re working on right now. Which are the most important to you?

Mills The studio of dreams™ works on a range of projects, all of which contribute to the success of the ‘design family’. My particular focus in maintaining and nurturing the team and environment we work in. Growing a design studio capable of delivering client solutions is one thing. But it’s the exposure of the studio to the world that is the key to its real success. And this year we realized this more than ever. So what did we do? Well to start we have committed around £150k into the iPhone App area, building a quality iFocussed™ team, proportioning it over the first 12 months of the ‘new app age’, giving us the confidence to say NO to paid projects that the chosen developers would have been on. Thus the iPhelopers™ were born, and were able to concentrate on the one and only: iApps™

The beauty of iApps™ is that we can contain all parts of the projects in the studio. We control the process, we control the budget, we control the direction. We are in control of making the app that may rocket sky high!

To date we have made Steppin™ and MouthOff™ and are currently working on inkstrumental™ with long time friend Jon Burgerman.

The issue we saw was that apps were taking too long to make, we needed to have a constant stream of quality apps. We got frustrated by not being able to talk about fresh apps, needed something to talk about prior to Inkstrumental™. Nothing better than producing quick turnaround projects. Pulling that crack team together over a beer one night. Simple task, we need something cool, something addictive, something that showcases quick thinking. We only produce what can be done in a 2 day period. Bottom line is that it has to go to Apple on hour 48.

So we created .™, the worlds first ‘48hourApp’, Concept. Design. Development. Marketing concept. All produced in the space of 48 hours. The name of the game is survival. It’s simple (so are we!!). You are .™. Blue circles are food. Red triangles are death. .™ starves and shrinks without food. Red death makes .™ hungrier. The gameplay is simple, and the name even more so, the name is the character.. and nothing better than trademarking a .!

What particular inspires me about .™ is that we have spent longer on creating the two ‘promo videos’ than the app itself. But what we have learnt is that the promotion is more key than the App itself. We created a Good and Bad trailer. See below

Inspired What did you want to be when you were little?

Mills Funny enough I don’t think I ever set out to be a designer, it was always in my family so it was almost a given that this would be the area I would go into. One of my early ‘career’ aims was in fact to be a a fighter pilot!, going so far as setting up a cockpit in my bedroom that I slept in. But once I realized you had to work hard and study to do this, I realized it was a no goer. I always liked being with people, talking and knowing what was going on, so although I trained to be a designer, I knew that my ability to understand design didn’t mean I had to be the designer. I take more pride in seeing others around me create while I maintain the culture and ustwo™ brand.

Inspired Tell us on fast-forward how’s your typical work day

Mills Running a studio is obviously not a 9-5 (infact no designer is 9/5!) So I get up at 5:45, get on tube, answer mails/watch video podcasts/read paper on tube. Grab a coffee at apostophe, get into studio for 7. Sit in front of computer/oversee/direct/meet/liase/organise for the next 13 hours and then go home.

Inspired The best creative journeys start when you’re …

Mills I’d probably say they come out at times when you have the most constraints. Open briefs are often more restrictive than free. So I like to be up against a wall with seemingly no way out before I unleash the mind.

Inspired Could you share us a few recent inspiration sources?

Mills My inspirations are coming from a range of sources and areas. I’m inspired by design, business and people in general. Recently I’ve been using the time on the tube on my way in to watch video podcasts, and I have found itsnicethat talks a great watch. Because App development is very much about the App promotion as it is development I have been fascinated by anything that can help me understand marketing, or what it takes to make a success of a product. I recently listened (using the iPhone yet again!) to Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘The Tipping Point‘ which goes some way to understanding why and how something gets popular.

Inspired What magazines do you like?

Mills I don’t go out of my way to read magazines these days, so although it already a cliched phrase, I have to say I find most of my information and inspiration directly from Twitter these days. The ease at which I can receive information I like in my hand makes it the ultimate magazine. I also love the sharing nature of it, If I see something in a mag I can’t easily share…

Inspired Is there anything on TV worth watching?

Mills These days the only TV I consume is TV created to numb the brain, so none is worth highlighting. Although its obvious to say, the Web and iPhone is slowly becoming the bedrock of viewing consumption, and this is where I am now getting my ‘intelligent’ viewing pleasure from.

Inspired Could you tell us three of your favorite artists/personalities that you would like others to discover?

Mills

Inspried What websites do you usually visit to get some visual inspiration?

Mills I don’t get that much time to spend on the web, so I rely on combination of ustwobies™ sharing their ‘visual webseeings’, and tweeters sharing visual beauty. I am also particularly inspired by the ongoing ‘visual commentary @mr_bingo puts out on twitter, it’s a level beyond the norm. When it comes to app inspiration, I’m particularly into sights like http://www.creativeapplications.net/ which is set up to showcase early interactive projects before they become reality.

Inspired Mac or PC?

Mills MAC, it’s the same old story with me. I love my mac, I use it for 13 hours per day and that means I need to love it.

Inspired Which of your dreams do you want to come true?

Mills On a personal level, I’d like to see the continued success of our studio. See it developing into unchartered digital areas such as gaming and entertainment (there are other areas but these are my personal ‘wishes’). More immediately I’d like to see one of our new apps hitting the big time, showing us a solid return on the 150k we have sunk into this growing area. The App arena is a truly exciting space to be involved in. It’s turner our design studio from a client focussed service studio to a studio who are also working on personal studio projects with a mix of creative and sales objectives. This adds a new element of excitement and reality.

Inspired Do you have any secret idea or formula that you would like to share with the Inspired Magazine readers?

Mills Never ever give up, even when you think its over. Work very hard, you soon realise that nothing comes to you without a fight. The world isn’t set up to give, if you want it, get out and sort it. You’ll always be surprised that things can happen if you try. Get up early, life’s too short so I personally advising working as many hours as you can, each hour brings you closer to that success we all crave.

Inspired What’s the most eccentric thing on your wish list?

Mills The normal thing to say would be 911 Turbo, the pack of 12 unique pugs running freely on a farm, and the 10 bedroom house with the swimming pool in the bedroom, and although I wouldn’t say no to such extravagance, I’m realistic. So I’d like to be part of a studio that people want to be part of. The extravagance would then be that we are in a position to push our work out successfully to the world via a ‘perfect team of ustwobies™’ covering, concept design, development, animation, marketing and PR.

Inspired Make some random predictions

Mills I could make them completely random, but then I have no power to control the reality. I am into reality, so i’ll predict some random activities you will see our studio partake in. I hope they come true!.

1. ustwo™ create a very successful iPhone app that changes the way users/developers understand app sales.

2. ustwo™ move into the medical arena releasing an interface that not only changes lives for the better but showcases a full flash lite® user interface via the flash® platform.

3. ustwo™ finally update their website, thus reflecting what we actually do to the world!.

4. Flash Applications hit the apple app store without them knowing they are flash compiles!

Inspired Is there anything you would like to add?

Mills I love the ustwo™ the studio of dreams™ family so much.

Inspired Before you go, please recommend a book and a movie

Mills District 9 is quality, so I’d go and see that if you haven’t. When it comes to books, I’m a keen advocator of Audiobooks, so i’d recommend the two that I have listened to, one being the previously mentioned The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell and his follow up book, Outliers: the Story of Success both are very insightful and open the eyes to how and why people and products are successful.
