Tutorials

Filter Functionality with CSS3 - Using the general sibling combinator and the :checked pseudo-class, we can toggle states of other elements by checking a checkbox or a radio button. In this tutorial we will be exploring those CSS3 properties by creating a experimental portfolio filter that will toggle the states of items of a specific type.

(Better) Tabs with Round Out Borders - A good-looking tab control usually has one feature that I’ve always found impossible to reproduce without images: borders that bend to the outside at the bottom of each tab. In this article I would like to show how you can use the CSS :before and:after pseudo elements to create this effect without using images.

Textarea Auto Resize - On a current project, I was trying to find a way to auto-resize a textarea according to some content that would be loaded in dynamically via Ajax. I didn’t know the height of the content and the textarea element doesn’t resize naturally like other HTML elements, so I needed to update the height of the element with JavaScript each time the content changed.

CSS Buttons with Pseudo-Elements – I’ve been experimenting with the power of CSS pseudo-elements, specially when it comes to mixing them with buttons and that way recreating some great effects that were only possible to do with sprites, in the past. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create buttons with a twist, using just one anchor tag per button and the great power of CSS.

dabblet- an interactive playground for quickly testing snippets of CSS and HTML code. It uses -prefix-free, so that you won’t have to add any prefixes in your CSS code. You can save your work in Github gists, embed it on websites and share it with others.

CSSrefresh - CSSrefresh is a small, unobstructive javascript file that monitors the CSS-files included in your webpage. As soon as you save a CSS-file, the changes are directly implemented, without having to refresh your browser.

w3clove - Site-wide markup validation. There’s no need to manually submit all your URLs. Just give us the URL of your home page and we’ll scrape it to get its internal links.

WebINK’s free plugin – Server based Font management, use real web fonts in Photoshop for your web designs. Design with Google and WebINK web fonts.

Bootstrap Generator - Kick-start your Twitter Bootstrap project the way you want. Simply alter some options and click “Generate” to get your compiled Bootstrap CSS file.

Gridpak - an interactive web application for generating responsive grid layouts very quickly. Once you have setup the layout, a custom download is ready which includes a CSS, LESS, SCSS file, etc.

impress.js - It’s a presentation tool inspired by the idea behind prezi.com and based on the power of CSS3 transforms and transitions in modern browsers.

Scrollorama - The jQuery plugin for doing cool scrolly stuff (any numeric CSS property). Design and build your site, dividing your content into blocks. Embed scrollorama.js after jQuery and initialize the plugin, passing the blocks class selector as a parameter.

Sugar - Sugar is a Javascript library that extends native objects with helpful methods. It is designed to be intuitive, unobtrusive, and let you do more with less code.

Lightbox_me - Lightbox_me is an essential tool for the jQuery developer’s toolbox. Feed it a DOM element wrapped in a jQuery object and it will lightbox it for you, no muss no fuss.

slabText – a jQuery plugin for producing big, bold & responsive headlines. Put simply, the script splits headlines into rows before resizing each row to fill the available horizontal space.

PxLoader - A Javascript library that helps you download images, sound files or anything else you need before you take a specific action on your site (like showing a user interface or starting a game). You can use it to create a preloader for HTML5 games and websites.

ResponsiveSlides.js - ResponsiveSlides.js is a tiny jQuery plugin that creates a responsive slideshow using images inside a single container. It work with wide range of browsers including all IE versions from IE6 and up.

CraftMap - jQuery plugin that converts a simple image into a functional map. Like Google Maps, you can place your own marker icons and add location information to specific markers with a draggable image interface.

Popcorn.js – An HTML5 media framework written in JavaScript for filmmakers, web developers, and anyone who wants to create time-based interactive media on the web. Popcorn.js is part of Mozilla’s Popcorn project.

TextExt Plugin for jQuery - TextExt’s modular design allows you easily turn a standard HTML text input into a wide range of modern, tailored to your needs input field without bloating your source code and slowing down your site with the code that you aren’t using.

Arctext.js – The main idea behind the Arctext plugin is to rotate letters with CSS3 transforms in order to place them along a curved path. The curve is always a segment of a circle (hence arc) for which the radius can be specified.

Sharrre (Social Sharing jQuery Plugin) - All sharing buttons are different, with Sharrre you can create uniform buttons to integrate with your designs. With Sharrre, the API buttons are called on demand and once, regardless of how many buttons you have.

Font.js: A Powerful Font Toolkit for JavaScript - a little font toolkit for your JavaScript that is kind of akin to the built-in Image object but for Fonts.  It gives you font loading events using a technique perfected in Mozilla’s pdf.js project, metrics information, and a better version of the canvas element’s measureText method with additional information such as height, bounding box, and leading.

One Day Left to Grab the MOJO Cyber Bundle!

One thing I’ve been noticing lately is that if you’re a blogger in the traditional meaning of the word – you’re publishing mostly text entries daily/weekly, and you’re not a business, or a company, or a magazine, etc., you’ll most likely find it hard to get a professional blogging WP theme.

There’s a number of premium theme stores, not to mention various places where you can get some free themes, or blank theme frameworks. But even though there’s much quality stuff available no one really focuses on traditional bloggers. Well OK, you can still get some themes for a traditional blog, but they never seem to be made the best the designer could make them.

I think that bloggers deserve to be treated with some quality themes too. And that’s why I’ve decided to review one of ThemeFuse’s themes – Writer, to check whether there’s finally something that does the job well and provides a truly quality solution for traditional bloggers. We shall see…

Who’s the theme for

Well, this one we already got covered. The name says it all. The target group here are writers and traditional bloggers – those whose mission concerns around sharing text content in the most usable and clear way possible.

The most important factor for this group of people is the focus put on the content. If you’re a writer then you know that there’s nothing more important than your piece itself. Therefore, the design can’t be too flashy and should never overshadow the content. The design is there to help in making the content more visible not to be the most important element of the site by itself.

That can be challenging. In essence, every designer can create something flashy, but only few can create something outstanding using just a minimum number of elements.

Second most important thing right after the articles themselves is attributing the author. As a blogger or writer the only thing you have is your name, so making sure that it’s clearly visible on the site is a must.

Is Writer getting the job done?

Well, it does display the author’s name and a short bio in the sidebar by default, which is a great move. So this we have taken care of. Now about the content and the focus put onto it. The first thing worth noticing is that the default setting in which the sidebar is presented on the right can be changed, and the sidebar can even be turned off completely if you find it more suitable for your blog.

The content itself could have a slightly better typography, but that’s just my taste, and you’re probably going to make some adjustments to the theme anyway. Writer doesn’t leave you alone here because it supports the @Font Face attribute and enables you to use some custom fonts. That being said, I think that Writer creates a really good environment in terms of emphasis on the content. The design lacks any flashy elements and, in this case, this is a very good thing.

Also, the default package comes with a small set of header images that work well with the theme, and of course, you can use your own. From what I can see after changing the header image, the whole theme gets a new feel, so even when someone uses the same theme only with a different header image, both sites will have a complete different appearance.

To summarize this segment I have to say that in terms of looks and congruence with the theme’s target group, Writer does a really good job.

What’s inside

First of all, the theme provides an easy way of changing the logo, changing the header title, basic SEO settings, settings of social sharing buttons, and even custom sidebars that can be set to appear on every page.

This, for example, gives many possibilities to bloggers who want to create a custom landing page for a newsletter signup or something like this. In such a scenario you can easily create a new sidebar and populate it with only non distracting elements, so the main message in the center gets the most focus.

Of course, things like the main navigation menu can be changed too, but no modern theme could exist without such a possibility.

Now the thing I like the best.

This is a constant element for all themes by ThemeFuse. I’m talking about shortcodes. For those of you not familiar with the concept, shortcodes are an easy way of including (usually) complex solutions as part of your content.

In its default state WordPress only lets you craft a post as a single block of text with some images here and there. ThemeFuse takes this further and they do it in a very user-friendly way. You don’t have to play around in the HTML code, you can use a simple shortcode instead.

For developers, modifying HTML is not challenging, but for normal people (sorry for that) it is. And shortcodes are a way of making life easier for them.

For example, by using shortcodes you can divide a post into columns, display nicely formatted pictures, include maps, buttons, charts, videos … just let me stop there. If you want the full list check this out: shortcodes in Writer.

You have to admit that even if you’re fairly familiar with WordPress, getting all this done manually can be time-consuming. Shortcodes are a great timesaver here. And for a beginner they are the only way of getting those things done.

Docs and licenses

This isn’t the first thing you think about when searching for a theme but it surely is important.

When you visit Writer’s Docs you’ll see that there is a support forum, an FAQ section, and a documentation package for the theme.

I don’t know how helpful the actual support is because I didn’t have an occasion to find out. So I guess you tell me.

There are two licenses like with all themes by ThemeFuse – Standard and Developer. I’d advise going with Standard if you’re a blogger and you’re searching for a theme you’re going to use yourself. However, if you’re a WordPress developer and want to create sites for your clients then go with Developer.

The Developer license also provides you with a package of PSD files, all source files and a discount voucher for future purchases.

It’s $49 for Standard, and $79 for Developer.

What I like about Writer

I’m going to give you a quick summary here:

• Design that doesn’t grab all the attention making the content itself the most visible element.
• Easily adjustable navigation and sidebars.
• Shortcodes!
• Built in SEO features.
• @Font Face support.
• The price, especially for the Developer package.

What I don’t like about Writer

This is probably something all themes by ThemeFuse have in common – the learning curve. Of course, I can’t say for sure because I haven’t had the opportunity to review each and every theme.

Anyway, here’s the thing. Writer is a theme with many different features and possible adjustments you can take advantage of. All this requires some amount of learning time, so by no means this is a buy-it-and-forget-it type of a theme.

Apart from that I can see only one more problem. In my opinion, the default typography could be set in a way that puts bigger emphasis on the main content block.

My overall opinion on this theme is very good. I see it as a very decent choice for traditional bloggers and writers publishing their work on the internet. It looks professional but not corporate – this often is a difficult balance to keep.

And it’s exactly what bloggers expect. They do want to look professional, but they don’t want to be mistaken for a media outlet or something similar.

Don’t You Forget About Bloggers! – “Writer” WP Theme Reviewed

Coming off the heals of our post about the power (and importance!) of personal branding – we’ve scoured the web (okay – mostly theme forest) looking for some great designs that can help you get up and running building your own personal brand.

1) Signature

This neat WordPress theme, has some custom functions and page templates that really help you display your abilities – no matter what your field. However, unlike many of the other themes listed – it has a much more conventional website look and feel. It also features some great photo display elements for those of you who are looking to display works of art (web designs, photos, etc.) on your CV. Overall a great design with a whimsical look and feel.

2) Ansonika

This clean, corporate, yet high-tech template has a fantastic layout and many options. Like many here it cleanly displays your abilities and can really help you stand out. The portfolio section is particularly nice – as are each of the portfolio pages. If you’re looking for a darker, very technical look this is the theme for you!

3) Careera

Aptly named, this theme focuses on simply (and with very few colors) highlighting your expertise. Of all the templates in this list the homepage of Careera is my favorite as – as a business owner myself and someone that has evaluated thousands of resumes – the homepage is (cover letter) is so well designed – it immediately screams your work, personal, and technical information – cleanly! There are no questions.

4) Clean And Corporate

True to its name “Clean and Corporate” is… clean and corporate. Although the colors are a bit unconventional – this is one of the simplest themes in the bunch – basically a digital resume – simple, clean, straightforward. Very nice!

5) Clean CV

Favorite of the bunch – saved the best for last! Why is it so well done? It’s simplicity. For those of you without a digital portfolio to display – you just need a one page site that has your information – is easy to update – and MOST IMPORTANTLY – easy to read. Clean CV does that for you. One page, scroll up and down – and links to your important social networks… nothing more, nothing less – just the best way to represent your self online.

The Best WordPress Themes for Indie Photography Enthusiasts

Howdy. Seems like only yesterday did our WordPress Weekly Roundup air, yet a whole week has rushed by delivering lots of interesting content and ideas revolving around WordPress and its communities.

Smashing Magazine published a fantastic article on WordPress Essentials: Interacting With The WordPress Database a couple of days ago. It’s all about the $wpdb global in WordPress and how to make it bend at will, providing CRUD (create, read, update, delete) functionality that can be used within themes and more importantly plugins. Daniel Pataki’s lengthy article is a definite must-read-and-bookmark.

After 5 release candidates that we’ve been looking at for the past couple of weeks, bbPress has finally made it to the point where they can say “bbPress 2.0 now available!“, so if you’ve been waiting to update to a newer version, now is the time. BuddyPress have also had their say earlier this week, congratulations to them too – BuddyPress 1.5 now available!, codenamed “Lombardi”, and destined to upgrade “without a hitch”.

A highly inspiring and educational article titled WordPress Multisite Essentials Part 1 – Concept, Success & Failure from James Farmer over at WPMU.org, offers insights into the WordPress Multisite exprience with the example of edublogs. Underlining the importance of commitment and dedication to a Multisite, the article goes on to analyze fictional case studies where Multisite wins and where it does not. While the article has not bit of technical information, it’s a real gem when it comes to setting Multisite startups on the right track to, hopefully, success.

A new WordPress tutorial on wptuts+ on how to Create A Google Static Maps Plugin should be added to your favorite collection of WordPress tutorials. Clear, concise, and quite detailed. Suitable for beginners to walk through and highly recommended for advanced WordPress plugin developers to skim through this 30 minute or so tutorial, taking readers from getting to know the basics of Google Static Maps API, setting up a new plugin in WordPress, creating a shortcode, testing and improving a quite useful plugin.

Categories, tags, and how-to avoid duplicate content on WordPress by Lance Sonka over at WPMU.org dives into SEO, duplicate content penalties and how to better setup WordPress to avoid search engine penalties. Categories, tags and links are looked at with some great examples, and a Matt Cutt’s video explaining how showing recent posts on your homepage can affect your search engine ranking performance. The comments generated by the article are quite interesting as well, so make sure your check them out.

G+ Plugins for WordPress Worth Considering posted by Patrick Smith gives an overview of 6 Google+ WordPress plugins worth looking into, ranging from simple +1 buttons to Google+ stream feeds.

Ending this second week of September we’ve collected some of this week’s happenings in our weekly roundup.

A little over two weeks ago we the folks over at bbPress brought us one step closer to the release of version 2.0. At the beginning of this week another stepping stone has been announced – bbPress 2.0 RC5. We’ll hopefully get to play with the 2.0 release sometime within two weeks. The development team are pretty confident that RC5 is the last release candidate.

Jean-Baptiste over at CatswhoCode.com presented quite an interesting article on Mastering HTML5 Prefetching using the rel="prefetch" attribute inside <link> tags in the <head> of your page for pages and images that you want the user browser to prefetch; pages that users are likely to request, and since they’ve been prefetched loading times should be near to instantaneous. Prefetching is currently not supported in Safari and IE, but you can make the other 70.9% of Internet users (according to w3school’s Browser Statistics) a little more happy. The article covers HTML5 prefetching (or “prerendring” as Chrome refers to it) in WordPress, offering a ready-to-be-used code snippet that you can paste into your theme’s header file, and a very useful jQuery snippet that automatically appends prefetch code to <head>.

A new WordPress tutorial over at WPBeginner has been published which goes over some of the ins and outs of How to Create Additional Image Sizes in WordPress. The tutorial makes it a point to explain what Hard Crop, Soft Crop and Unlimited Height modes are, explains a bit on how to use custom image sizes inside the WordPress loop, and features the Simple Image Sizes plugin that makes it easy to create custom image sizes, regenerate them and add them to your settings pages.

Speaking of tutorials, Oliver Dale of WPLift provided a great collection of 20 Really Handy Tutorials to help you build WordPress Themes this Tuesday. Menus, Shortcodes, Custom Post Types, Widgets, Child Themes, Buttons, Plugins, and general WordPress theme-building lessons and tutorials. A great place to start if you’ve just begun exploring WordPress development.

How do you make WordPress more mobile friendly? Kevin Muldoon from WPMods explores 3 plugins in his 3 WordPress Plugins That Make Your Website More Mobile Friendly. The plugins revolve around detecting and ultimately substitute your regular WordPress theme for one that is better displayed on mobile devices. We checked out WPtap Mobile Detector, which is a neat plugin and has fingerprints for 9 different mobile devices, but, unfortunately no user-friendly way to allow for the addition of new ones.

Yoast is asking you to point out themes that are incompatible with their WordPress SEO Plugin in their WordPress SEO Theme Compatibility Survey. If you happen to use a theme that breaks the SEO Plugin make sure you let Yoast know.

And finally, another tutorial from wptuts+ on Custom Post Type Pagination Chaining Method. The five-minute tutorial offers a solution to paginating custom post types by using, what is referred to as chaining. In short, a custom post type template makes use of the archive-posttype.php template and it works. Why? Check out the tutorial.
