For those that celebrated the 4th of July, I hope it was a relaxing weekend and to all my fellow North Americans up there who celebrated Canada Day; I hope you safely returned home without getting a flash bang grenade thrown at your lower extremities. *wink* Regardless, I do hope that all of you stayed safe! Perhaps because of the weekend where Americans rips off their shirts and drink ’til they drop, the vast selection or inspirational infographics were a bit poor.

1. The Biggest Tech IPOs of this Year

Regardless, I do hope that all of you stayed safe! Perhaps because of the weekend where Americans rips off their shirts and drink ’til they drop, the vast selection or inspirational infographics were a bit poor. However, Single Grain’s graphic on the biggest tech IPOs this year, really caught my eye. The use of data and information! =) It’s pretty easy but I’ll touch base with you either tomorrow or Sunday.

2. The State of Education

With advances being made every day, it’s hard for education to keep up. It’s just one of those issues that need to be addressed, but as we know, it’s not just some walk in the park. I featured this one because it literally hit home for me. The Online Education team using the college rule notebook paper and creating the student-like point of view, as if a child were expressing their concerns, was completely ingenious. And completely hand drawn. The illustrations were down to the teeth, as if you were a student who doodled because they were bored and needed to be heard. =)

Take a look, you’ll see what I mean.

3. That’s What THAY Say

“ Hunch has a new product. It’s supposed to change our lives and revolutionize the Internet. THAY (Teach Hunch About You) asks the person a series of questions to find recommendations to the wherever it is, that Hunch thinks is best for you. For a bit more elaboration, go to Tim’s post and learn a little more about this scary but exciting new product.

And because you guys have bigger screens now and got a taste for minimal design we thought it’s time for an upgrade. This is where Joe comes in: he created this sexy new look and our friends from WPSumo helped us to code it on the most powerful WordPress framework out there over the weekend.

The original design

I hope this one will go down in history as The First InspiredMag Design, mostly because all the older versions were done entirely by me and were horrible. This one was designed & coded by Derek Herman of Envato, based on his insanely popular Sharp Orange WordPress theme.

Joe Nyaggah

Joe is a tireless seeker of knowledge, occasional purveyor of wisdom and also, coincidentally, a graphic designer. He released two very popular WP themes on MOJO Themes (Candy Shoppe & The Restaurant) and works on the next one already.

WPSumo

WPSumo is the new premium WordPress framework that took the blogging community by storm offering the most powerful, clean and smart solution for bloggers to customize and manage their blogs. WPSumo is very SEO friendly, has a ton of features and options right out-of-the box (including a mobile theme), a huge selection of shortcodes, an exclusive Blog Audit plugin and and a top notch 24/7 support team.

SO here’s our new design, powered by the WPSumo framework. We still have a few tweaks to make but let me know what you think about it so far, feel free to brag about the old design etc in the comments and thank you very much for stopping by again. Stay tuned for more happy days!

Jonathan Safran Foer

Jonathan Safran Foer (born February 21, 1977) is a Jewish-American author best known for his novels Everything Is Illuminated (2002) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005). In 2009, he published a work of nonfiction entitled Eating Animals.

Ulterior motives

interview by Larry Carroll

Escape is a word that can’t help but come to mind when you consider the career of Jonathan Safran Foer. His acclaimed novels “Everything Is Illuminated” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” gave readers a stylized version of our reality where tragedy still exists, but is woven into a tapestry of beauty, adventure and self-discovery. In “Tree of Codes,” he sliced out words and sentences from his favorite book, creating a wholly original work from its stripped bones. And in 2009, he published his first nonfiction work, an examination of his own struggles with vegetarianism called “Eating Animals.” In this interview, Foer talks about dodging expectations, mutilating one masterpiece to make another, and why he has blank pieces of notebook paper hanging on his kitchen walls.

When you sit down to write, what drives you?
A lot of different things make me do what I do. Sometimes, I do it because that’s what I want to do. Sometimes, I do what I do because that’s what I did in the past. Sometimes I do what I do because that’s my job. Part of being a writer is balancing all the incentives — or disincentives — to actually write.

After the success of your first two works of fiction, why did you decide to go so far off the beaten path?
I didn’t want to write another novel, just because I had in the past. With “Eating Animals,” the choice of becoming a vegetarian was a subject I’d been interested in since I was a kid, but had never given any real serious thought to my decisions, whether it was religion or instinct. When my wife got pregnant, before making the choice on someone else’s behalf, I wanted to take the question more seriously.

Is being a writer ultimately about following your passion? Do you need to be passionate to write well?
No, I don’t actually think so. You have to care about what you’re writing about, but on a day-to-day level it’s not about passion, it’s about willpower. Very often, writing isn’t fun at all; it’s quite aggravating. But I’ve found that when it’s most aggravating, it provides the best material. People have these magical ideas about it being an inspired process with muses and so on, but it’s just the opposite. It challenges one’s will — every day, there’s another blank page to fill.

With “Tree of Codes” you sliced out chunks of Bruno Schulz’s “The Street of Crocodiles” and used die-cutting to create as much a sculpture as a novel. How did you come up with such a unique idea?
I’ve always had some interest in that technique of dye-cutting books, the physicality of books and how little that physicality is taken advantage of. It’s a particularly interesting issue now, because books are becoming even less of a physical presence. With “Tree of Codes,” I wanted to make a book that remembered it was a physical thing.

You once wrote about your hobby of collecting blank pages from famous authors. Do you still do that?
No, I don’t do it anymore; that was something I did before I was a writer. Somebody giving me a page, a piece of paper, the next page they would have written on — that was really interesting to me, and moving in a way. I hung them up on the wall of my apartment when I was in Queens. Now I have 40 or so, and a number of the writers — Susan Sontag, David Foster Wallace — have died. So they’ve taken on even more meaning.

Do you still look at those pages for inspiration?
Not really. I look at them because they’re in my kitchen [laughs]. But I continue to really like them.

Is your dream that someday, some young kid will ask you for a blank page?
No, my dream is to write the things that feel significant to me. A dream is something that happens before a book gets published.

Often, all that’s needed to create a killer album cover is unique and inspired typographical elements. There are various examples of both great classic and modern album covers already released by music producers.

However, since most people have already viewed these album covers at some point during their lives, it’s often much more interesting to view the unique approaches up and coming graphic designers have taken with redesign projects of top album covers. As such, here are 12 inspiring examples of typography-based album covers – some are redesigns, some are the originals.

The Wretched Habit

The combination of grunge-inspired typography and great texturing are what make this such a great album cover design. The unique textures help to draw in viewers and the bright colors are what hold their attention.

The Legends

Unique typography and other graphic design elements are what make this album cover an inspiring example. It’s a simple, yet extremely effective design.

311: Sound System

This 311 album cover is definitely not minimalist in nature with its in-your-face elements. The typography usage complements the design perfectly and matches 311′s style.

The Cinematic Orchestra

Those designers who aren’t afraid to take typographical and illustrative risks are the ones most likely to experience success, as shown with this album cover. This design makes great use of white space and features unique text placement.

Stateless: Exit

A playful combination of typography and messy artwork make this a design worth viewing. Who said a design must be neat and orderly to be inspiring?

Szavak Ereje (Power of Words)

Powerful 3D typography, great use of color and original illustrations – this album cover has it all. It’s both an impactful and inspiring piece of art.

The White Stripes

When used appropriately, 3D typography can transform a mediocre album cover into an eye-pleasing one. The creative transformation of a microphone cord into text makes this a truly inspiring example.

The Remixer Remixed Again

This album cover not only makes great use of typography, but also incorporates textures and awesome colors for an out-of-the-park design. The design also makes great use of transparency.

Patti Smith

A current popular typography trend is the handwritten design. This cover not only fully capitalizes on this trend but also creatively uses typography to build images. It’s splendidly messy and inviting.

Murmur

This album cover sets typography into motion in a dark and mysterious setting. The perfect uses of black and white elements are what make this design so inspiring.

Sven Weisemann

As this example demonstrates, combining bright typographical elements and dark images is a great way to catch viewer attention.

John Zorn: Naked City

Jagged typography and various messy elements comprise this album cover. This design is another example proving neat and orderly isn’t often the path to choose when designing effective album covers.

Album artwork has come to be an element that sets great albums apart from the subpar ones. Various elements are often used when making great album covers such as unique photos and off-the-wall ideas. However, the only element often needed to make an inspiring cover is a unique approach to typography.

I absolutely love vectors. Vector graphics actually motivated me in getting started and experimenting with digital illustration. Many illustrators from all around the world use this popular method and create fresh, cutting edge vector art. However, while vectoring is a technique, character design is admittedly a quite challenging creative procedure that aims to express, communicate and consequently produce a visual entity that engages the viewer.

And of course when vectors meet character design, the outcome is eye-catching! Check out these 20 imaginative characters and click on images to view more by each designer. Enjoy!

In September of 2007, I chose to engage in a four year art program at the University at Buffalo’s Department of Visual Studies. My hope was that my interest in graphic design would lead me on a path far from the arid and repetitive routine of large text books and long lectures that had plagued my freshman year of college. In May of 2010 I graduated from this program with a B.F.A. in Communication Design, a solid network of professional contacts, and a portfolio constructed well enough to immediately land me my first job in the design industry. After repeatedly being told how hard it was going to be to obtain a job as a designer in such a competitive field, I couldn’t help but conclude that it was clearly luck which got me to that first day of working as a professional.

I’ve now been working for six months and I can already safely say I am better off because of my education than I would have been without it. But not for the reasons you may think. I was not taught how to master Photoshop or Illustrator. I was not taught how to compose a piece of work a specific way in order for it to be most effective. I was not taught how to communicate with a client or even meet anyone’s needs other than those of my own. In fact, I hadn’t even designed a website before this past summer. I reassessed my previous assumption and found that I actually started off on the right foot because of one thing: Self-confidence. It’s this single, consistent factor that has led me to a great beginning in my professional career, and I have my professors to thank for igniting it.

Throughout my three years of study, I found the lack of self-confidence in design students to be shocking so I made it a point to always find the positive in everything I worked on. But just like everything else related to art and design, I believe self-confidence is best self-taught. With that said, I decided to begin to assess how I went about gaining self-confidence.

Write Everything Down

Benjamin Van Dyke was the very first professor who made a profound impact on my mindset as a designer. One of the many things he stressed was writing. He forced us to begin writing everything down. All our thoughts, concepts, observations, rants, and sketches were to be recorded and archived in whatever written form we desired. I found writing to be an organized method of legitimizing the insanity that constantly floated throughout my head. I’m not saying I’m insane, but I would generally have hundreds of ideas which I wanted to put into visual form that I just couldn’t keep track of.

Writing was the answer. It allows you to make sense of what you’re subconsciously absorbing during your day. Even more important, it allows you to revisit your thoughts and apply them when needed, specifically when trying to make sense of something that you previously didn’t understand. I feel writing will only help you grow as a designer. It’s the first step in training yourself to make predictions, statements, conclusions, and connections pertaining to your thoughts, the ideas that are unique to you. Once you have a greater understanding of your ideas, you’ll begin to enforce them, and naturally become confident in them.

Take More Than You Can Give

In my experience, design students tend to steer clear of criticism when they can. I feel as young designers we do this not because we lack the ability to create great work but because we lack self-confidence. As you build your ideas and gain more knowledge, do not hesitate to apply your intelligence by giving respectful criticism to your peers. Try your hardest to give constructive criticism. This will not only help your peers with their creative processes but it will make them recognize the fact that you have something to say and you’re not afraid to say it. It will undoubtedly lead to their appreciation for you, so long as your criticism is indeed constructive, and result in a natural boost in your self-confidence. However, always be willing to take more criticism than you give. Listen to what others have to say, no matter how appropriate you may think their comments are.

We as designers seek reactions to the messages we create. Taking criticism will help you refine your creative process so that you can better achieve the results desired in future projects. It will also allow you to build ‘thick skin’ which can come in handy as you will always receive negativity from someone regarding your work. As you become more comfortable with criticism, you will become more comfortable experimenting with design and explaining your results. This is a necessary step in building your self-confidence, and a huge attribute to have when searching for a job or dealing with clients.

Have a Reason…For Everything

While in college, I found that too many design students anchored themselves on the idea that if they created something that looked awesome, it would automatically be deemed successful. I learned not to simply create things that look good. I found that in order for my work to be successful I needed to have a reason behind every decision I made. Once you create something with reason AND it’s beautiful, then you’re chances of success are greatest.

You must keep in mind that people tend to interact with things that are aesthetically pleasing. However, more often than not, pieces of work that are aesthetically pleasing are only so because the piece of work has already served its purpose in such a naturalized way that we didn’t even notice it working its magic. (This notion is extremely important in UX design.) Having reasons for your decisions will inevitably lead to you creating better work and a better portfolio. A better portfolio equals higher self-confidence.

Sacrifice

There are two things design students fail to realize, and they’ll probably be hard for some of you to stomach. One is that you actually have more free time now than you will in a few years. Secondly, letter grades and grade point averages really don’t mean anything in the design industry.

It’s important to sacrifice certain aspects of college life when necessary in order to attain short term goals relating to your creative process. Take the necessary time needed to meet the requirements for your assigned projects. But make sure you take the extra time you have to find ways to push those projects in directions no one else will. Step outside the area of what is expected and sacrifice a weekend or two to finding a way to make a project unexpected, surprising, or simply ridiculous. Once you’ve done this, you will feel better about your work, knowing you pushed yourself to a boundary you previously were unfamiliar with.

Next, don’t worry about the grade you receive on a project. If you’re passionate about design, and you put your heart into proving something through your work, it will be noticed as a success by some regardless of the grade received. Letter grades are simply scare tactics made to limit you to the standards set by that particular institution’s education system. They’re in effect to make sure you abide by rules. Breaking the rules makes way for innovation. Creating something unique requires the actualization of something never done before. I’m certainly not recommending you completely disregard your grade point average, but what I believe is that it’s easy for everyone to fulfill a project’s requirements by incorporating what is deemed necessary by a letter grade and nothing more. I encourage you to go beyond what is necessary and what is expected of you. Do this and I can assure you it will end with a satisfying letter grade and, more importantly, a heightened sense of self-confidence.

Always Have Goals

If you don’t have a vision of where you want to be in five years, get one. Every designer has a dream of being the best at what he or she does. But to achieve that dream you have to first set goals.

Start now while you’re young. Tell yourself that you’re going to create a beautiful portfolio by the end of the semester. When the end of the semester rolls around, tell yourself that you’re going to have a job by the end of the summer doing what you love to do. When you have that job, tell yourself that you’re going to master typography, etc. All of this may sound strange, as if you’re faking yourself into believing everything is going to be alright. The advantage to making you actually believe in yourself is that you loosen up mentally. Just like an athlete, it’s important for a designer to stay loose. This means banishing worry from your mind so that you can focus on what your imagination is telling you. Believing in yourself will allow you to manage the stress that comes with being a designer. Believing in yourself is important, it’s essentially the most prominent factor in acquiring self-confidence.

Self-Confidence Can Lead To Success

If you’re able to build self-confidence as a design student, you’ll be one step closer to being able to comfortably master whatever it is you desire in life. Confidence leads to better artwork and in turn will lead you to a better portfolio. One thing they do teach you in school is that a better portfolio will certainly give you an increased chance at making a mark in the creative community. And that’s something no designer will argue.

“We wanted to illustrate the ridiculousness of the song by setting the line “We Freak in My Jeep” in type that was inspired by the Gutenberg Bible, and then taking it a step further and flocking it with nonpareil sprinkles.
