We were required to work within the brand guidelines provided by TED, but wanted to create something that felt distinct from the parent conference. Creatie is a platform for creatives and combines a magazine, website, newsletter and live sessions. It’s published 6 times a year and aims to unravel the creative process behind the work of photographers, art directors, copywriters, illustrators and more.

Kleivan Schnitler: Steen-Hansen AS

“Steen-Hansen is a one of the oldest paint factories in Norway”. This is a perfect example of why I feel packaging needs to be minimalist, to only what is necessary; Colour, brand and type of paint. Saying that coverage would probably be useful as well, maybe it’s round the back.

Eric Power: Tatooine

Papercut stop motion animated music video for the Jeremy Messersmith song ‘Tatooine’. The animation is perhaps a bit basic but it’s a great accompaniment to the soothing vocals.

“Ferocious is a curated, quarterly publication that collects illustrators, graphic artists, short fiction authors and written text”. I do love these sort of theses, ordered myself a copy, hope it’s as good as It’s Nice That or the Process Journal. Who ever said print was dead?

Linde Design: Migros Magazine

“Some editorial illustrations I did for the Migros supermarket customer magazine in Swiss.” Charming little character isn’t he, it’s the contrast of colours that got me, really stands out.

Jeksel: Birdy Juice

“Concept for Packaging design for Birdy-Juice with 3 different fruit flavors. The idea is still learning to fly and more work is coming soon”. Clever use of the flaps to make adorable little penguin cartons.

Sesame Street: Smell Like A Monster

It’s the Old Spice advert, but with monsters; Grover to be precise. That just about explains why you should watch it I feel. I admire how they’re keeping Sesame Street relevant and entertaining in the digital age with an excellent use of their YouTube channel.

Connect Design: Watch And Diary Book

Clever idea to put a clock in a notebook so you can plan out your days by the hour. Reminds me of the Diacarta iPhone app, but for the notebook, perfect.

Tobias Putrih

Boxes, lots of boxes. Seems to define most of his work but on closer inspection it’s the interplay and tessellation of geometric shapes that seems to inspire him. Couldn’t find any more information about his process or why he does what he does, but I love it.

“8 Faces is a print magazine for devotees of typography and the aim of the magazine is to bring type to the masses.” I missed out on getting the first issue, really quite gutted.

COÖP: Lee Wash Guide

“Poster presenting 23 washes of Lee Jeans. The still photography series used props and compositions suggestive of materials and techniques employed to achieve the various washes. The piece was packaged in a custom designed laundry box and delivered to stores.”

MacLaren McCann Toronto: Coca-Cola Outdoors

Feeling thirsty for a drink of Coca-Cola? Well apparently these models were, though judging from the fact that it’s the same advert in both shots they ever have a deal or the other adverts are fakes.

PokedStudio: 8-Bit Lands

Three websites have been designed as showcase piece for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 Beta that’s just been released. Of course they work just as well in over modern browsers and feature excellent design, especially the second one (pictured above) in my opinion.

Tri-fold album case design for two music acts. Linked to the site I found it on because the studio’s website is some music playing Flash monster.

I don’t necessarily agree with the message of the animation but the animation itself is beautiful.

So this is the eleventh edition of Be Inspired and boy did I have a lot of bookmarks to get through, I’ve reduced them down as I always do when I have too many, quality over quantity and all that. Welcome to the tenth edition of Be Inspired! This week I seem to have been inspired by abstract paintings as they feature repeatedly without me really realising until I assembled the post. It’s an odd one really, I’m not always sure of their meaning but I can appreciate their mysterious virtues nonetheless, not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s nice to find inspiration in forms and colours, I try my best to find the artist’s explanation as they’re going to know best.

The whole range of illustrated animations on show on RecycleNow’s Vimeo page are all beautifully simple and clear, they’re informative to boot as well.

Zeitguised: Boolean Taxidermy

“Since 2001, Zeitguised has been the strange, obscure twin of contemporary zeitgeist imagineering.” I’m not really sure what is going on here, but I like it in some strange way.

And I’m back from my holiday, most enjoyable stuff and strangely Fever only said I had 200 points to get through so I’m guessing they expire after awhile because I was expecting thousands. I will have missed some great design I’m sure but I simply don’t have the time to look back over all of it.

Anyway, back to the schedule. I’ll admit I was in a bit of a rush this week so I’ve reverted back to my original idea of using this space to give the work context rather than my opinion.

Mike Giesser: A Broader Perspective

“This book was the result of an internal campaign/photo competition [themed around the notion of A Broader Perspective] for the staff of Elsevier. The content is a mix of amateur photography, quotes about books, facts about ScienceDirect [the product we were promoting] and results from keyword searches performed on ScienceDirect.”

“Never warp your brain with time zone math again.” Always was a bit confusing and my only point of reference became 10am in the US=5pm GMT because that’s when the Apple conferences were.

Porta4 Design Studio: Terrakunza

On first glance this looks like the next edition of Adobe’s Creative Suite packaging but in fact it’s the box for Terrakunza; gourmet cookies to you and me. It’s credited to Porta4 but I couldn’t find it on their website so linked to the place I found it as a back up.
